Udaragama Kumbalkaruvo
Author: Nimal
Sarathchandra
An author publication

Udaragama Kumbalkaruvo is an indepth study of the potters of
Udaragama in the Kurunegala district. After tracing the location and
geography of Udaragama, the author gives a graphic account of the social
and economic situation of the village. Then he discusses the transport
and storage of raw material required for the industry.
According to him, the potters collect certain kinds of earth as it
were from a mine and lay it in a great heap, suffer it to be exposed to
the wind, the rain and the sun for thirty or forty years, during which
time it is never disturbed. By this it becomes refined and fit for being
wrought into the vessels.
After explaining the preparation of the material, the author gives an
account of the forming operations. A multitude of techniques have been
devised for applying pressure to plastic clay to form vessels. The
simplest and most obvious is pinching between the fingers and the thumb.
After describing the forming stage and firing stage the book gives a
pictorial illustration of the pottery industry.
The book comes with a map of Sri Lanka giving the location of various
industries, the potters’ seven-day production cycle and the plan of a
potter's house.
