The Department of Textile and Clothing Technology presented the Graduation Fashion Show 2013 in Colombo last week. Fashion Design and Product Development graduates have contributed immensely to change the apparel industry in Sri Lanka which commenced as sweatshops in the late 1970s changed to a more competitive high value-added industry without depending on quotas or concessions such as GSP+. Today, the apparel industry of Sri Lanka is a ‘Total Solution Provider'. This year's principal sponsors of the fashion show were MAS holdings and Textured Jersey. The awards segment included Outstanding Designer Brand Award, Commercially Creative Designer Award, Serendib Inspirational Designer Award and Innovative Designer Award. Three new awards were added this year to encourage students to venture into new categories of designer fashion, Menswear Designer Award, Creative Knitwear Award and Innovative Textile Fabric Award. IT/BPO sector, a billion dollar industry soon

Bangladesh is ahead of Sri Lanka in the IT/BPO industry which has grown leaps and bounds, IFS Sri Lanka and South Asia, Managing Director Jayantha de Silva said. New tourism market in emerging economies

Sri Lanka is taking the initiative to reduce its dependency on Western markets and exploit opportunities in emerging economies and the government last week recorded its new initiative in attracting more Chinese tourists to the country.
