Wijesiri and Kumari win Triathlon

D L Wijesiri of Sri Lanka Navy and G G Manomi Kumari emerged National Open Triathlon men's and women's champions respectively at the championship which was worked off as a part of the 2013 Carlton Super Sports at Tissamaharama in Hambantota yesterday.

Sailor Wijesiri had very little competition at the men's championship which added colour to the seventh edition of the sports extravaganza, attracted hundreds of spectators at the Tissa Lake. The silver medal was awarded to Amith Kumara while K G G D Asela was placed third.

Manomi Kumari, the toughest competitor in the women's championship, was no match for second placed M R Roopawathi. W A D Mallika won the third place.

The national Open Triathlon started with a 750-metre swim at the Tissa Lake and was followed by a 20-kilometre cycling race and a five-kilometer-run.

Meanwhile in the Carlton Regatta, conducted at the Tissa Lake on Friday evening, Sri Lanka Air Force swept away both skulls and the Fours to gain 10 points while Navy picked up five points for the Double Sculls.

In the Women's category, Colombo Rowing Club emerged victorious with a 10-5 point lead over and Bishop's College. CRC won both the Scull and Fours races, while Bishop's took the Double Scull events.

Races were held in a team format, with a Scull, Double Scull and Coxed Four racing twice for each crew. Each 600 m race earned a specific amount of points which determined the overall winners, providing a fresh experience for the Tissa residents and few foreigners who were present after nightfall, with the tank flood-lit.

In the tug-o-war competition, Sri Lanka Army 'A' team beat President's Security Division to win the championship. Army 'B' were placed third when they over run the Engineering Sports Club team.

Mountain Biking

Gayan Janaka Wijethunga and W P E R Dulakshi of Suhada Sports Club emerged men's and women's open mountain biking champions. In the age group categories, Nirantha Fernando (Under 19-boys), Yasarathna Perera (over 40-men), K G A Pubudu Rathsara (Under 16-boys), W A Ishani Chaturika (Under 19-girls), A G Shakthi Aditya (Under 13-boys), W A Suganthi Malsha (Under 16-girls), K H Nethmi Megawarna (Under 13-girls), K G Adheepa Udantha and D S Gihan Kavindra (Under 10-boys), W P Ashani Rukshila (Under 10-girls)

The 2013 edition of the Carlton Super Sports consists of eight sports events, Sri Lanka Open Triathlon, 4×4 race, mountain bike races, tug-of-war, motor racing, rowing, aquatic sports and boxing.

Under a concept of the Tharunyata Hetak Chairman and Hambantota District Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, the Carlton Super Sports has been a massive crowd puller since the first edition itself.

Concluding the 2013 Carlton Super Sports, the Carlton Supercross will be held at the Race Track today.
