Electricity extension only after deep scrutiny

Minister of power and energy Pawithra Wanniarachchi, said that "the extension of electricity cables Northwards through Puttalam lagoon will be decided only after close scrutiny".

The fishermen around Puttalam lagoon were up in arms against the C.E.B's proposal to erect electricity posts across the Puttalam lagoon to extend high-tension electricity cables Northwards from the Norochcholai Coal burnt power plant.

Ebb and flow takes place in this lagoon back and forth between Puttalam and Kalpitiya every six hours and there is a risk that their fishing nets get spun around the electricity posts is the reason for the objection of the fishermen for the project.

This had been brought to the attention of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

At the discussion at the auditorium of Puttalam District Secretariat last week, Minister of Power and Energy appointed committee to study the matter.
