A scene from the play.

Weeraya Merila (The Hero is dead) will be staged on March 23 at 3.30
pm and 6.30 pm at Navarnagahala. Weeraya Merila bagged seven awards at
the State Drama Festival including the award for the best drama of the
year (2002).
The drama showcases the darker role of the modern media of exploiting
prominent personalities such as intellectuals, artistes or professionals
and using them as tools to achieve their consumer focused agendas and
the unfortunate fate such personalities have to face eventually. The
popular dramas such as Maname of the well known Sarachchandra have been
kept with undiminished popularity among Sri Lankan drama viewers over
generations. Possibly in a somewhat similar manner talented young
dramatists, such as Rajitha, too are successful in keeping viewers
entertained with modern dramas. Weeraya Merila has been staged over the
past years uninterruptedly. The theme of the drama is still relevant
today.
The cast includes Gihan Fernando, Darmapriya Dias, Priyankara
Ratnayake, Gihan de Chikera, Prasad Suriyarachchi, Dayadeva Edirisinghe,
Sakun Fernanda and Dilini Sampath Jayaweera.
The drama had been staged successfully more than 150 times.
Weeraya Merila is sponsored by the Royal College Union’s Table Tennis
Advisory and Management Committee. The proceeds will be utilised for the
development of Table Tennis at Royal College. This is the third
consecutive year that a Sinhala drama has been selected as a fund
raiser.
