Diabetes awareness program
A diabetes awareness program, Seeni Meanie was launched among
schoolchildren in the Nuwara Eliya District recently by the Rotary Club
of Nuwara Eliya RI District 3220.
In colourful parade over 1,300 schoolchildren marched through the
streets of Nuwara Eliya carrying placards to educate the adults and
younger generation of the danger of the killer disease.
Members of the clergy belonging to the different religious
denominations participated at the meeting. The President,
Rotary Club of Nuwara Eliya RTN.P.Maheshwaran, welcoming the large
geathering said, "the Rotary Club launched an anti diabetic programm
among schoolchildren to make them aware of the danger of the killer
disease which has affected alarming numbers worldwide and in Sri Lanka,
not only among the elders but even infants and children.
Therefore, the younger generation should be cautious of their diet
habits and avoid eating junk foods. The children should also educate
their elders at home and in public places."
The Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Mahinda Kumara Dodambage thanked the Rotary
Club for organising such an important event in the city and said it
should be an ongoing program in the interest of the public.
