Rangana Herath takes 15th five wicket haul:
Bangladesh 240 : SL 18/1
by Ranjan Amandappa
Diminutive left arm leg spinner Rangana Herath took his 15th five
wicket haul in Test cricket (5 for 68) and paceman Nuwan Kulasekera
struck twice in the first over with the second new ball to take (3 for
54)and restrict Bangladesh for a moderate first innings score of 240 on
the first day of the second and final cricket Test at the R. Premadasa
International Cricket Stadium.
Sri Lanka were 18 for 1 in 4 overs losing opener T.M. Dilshan when he
cut and edged one to be caught behind for no score.
The Bangladesh innings were sporadically build by useful knocks
coming from the bats of Monumul Haque (64), Nasir Hossain (48) and Sohag
Gazi (32) with their reputed duo Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim
unable to make significant contributions.
At lunch the visitors were 62 for 2 after 27 overs and at tea they
were 155 for 5 in 55 overs. Bangladesh lost their last 5 wickets for 85
runs with Herath and Kulasekera doing most of the damage sharing eight
wickets in a late rally.
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and invited Bangladesh
to bat on a wicket, which he thought a bit different from the usual one
that they had played on previous occasions. The pitch was a newly laid
one, and was last used in 2010 against a Test with the West Indies.
Mathews would have expected more pace in the pitch as he had included an
extra fast bowler Suranga Lakmal in place of spinner Ajantha Mendis.
Both teams included three fast bowlers. Bangladesh too had three.
Replacements as they brought in Tamim Iqbal, the opener and Rubel
Hossain with Robuil Islam who were left out in the first Test due to
injury.
The wicket appeared to be a different one, the weather was fine but a
bit overcast and it seemed the first hour might well be an awkward one
for Bangladesh.
The new ball did nothing extravagant to really unsettle the openers
Tamim Iqbal and Jahurul Islam. Kulasekera and Suranga Lakmal made a
couple of deliveries to fly off the wicket, which was not threatening
enough to pose a problem to the batsmen. Then Kulasekera in the seventh
over of the innings however, produced a good length delivery and Iqbal
playing across the line was trapped lbw. With the dismissal of Tamim
Iqbal, the Bangladesh most renowned batsman Mohammad Ashraful joined by
Tamim Iqbal were left to take their side’s score to reasonable
proportions. Ashraful who had been having tremendous success against Sri
Lanka as batsman scoring a debut hundred and who missed a double ‘ton’
in the first Test at Galle. Ashraful had cut down his attacking
instincts and had settled into his grove and batted sensibly with his
partner Islam.
The second wicket pair Jahurul Islam and Mohammad Ashraful paced
their stand well and had added 35 runs and was just gaining momentum
when a smart piece of fielding by Shaminda Eranga from mid - on beat the
probing bat of Ashraful who made a lackadaisical effort while running
and paid the penalty. Islam after reaching 23 was caught behind by
Eranga.
Bangladesh plunged further when they lost their skipper Mushtiqur
Rahim the first Test double centurion for 7 bowled by Herath off a ball
that kept low which put the left arm spinner Herath on the wicket taking
path. He also accounted for Monumul Haque who batted sensibly for a 98
ball 64 with fours and had Sohag Gazi for 24.
