“The government has conceptualised a policy to enhance the gem and
jewellery sector as a thrust industry, which has enormous potential for
growth and to promote Sri Lanka as a gem and jewellery hub in the
region,” said Minister of Environment and Renewable Energy, Susil
Premajayanth at the seventh Singaporean International Jewellery Expo
2013 in Singapore.
Minister Premajayantha was a special guest at the event organised by
the Singapore Gem and Jewellery Association. More than 12 top gem and
jewellery exporters from Sri Lanka took part.
Around 200 top gem and jewellery exporters from several parts of the
world were present.
The Minister said that since the Chinese government offered a
tax-free regime for the Sri Lankan gem and jewellery exports in the
aftermath of President Mahinda Rajapaksa's recent visit it would benefit
the local sector because China has become the second largest gem and
jewellery buyer in the world due to its rapid economic development. |
