SAARC, Asian polls observers for PC election

The Elections Secretariat is expected to invite SAARC and Asian polls observers to monitor the Provincial Council elections to be held in September.

A spokesperson for the Elections Secretariat yesterday said the question of international monitors was taken up at various meetings the Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya held last week. He is expected to send invitations to monitoring bodies within the SAARC region and Asia shortly.

However, the spokesperson said there was a likelihood that a team of election monitors will be invited from the Commonwealth office, due to their interest in the conduct of the polls in three provinces, particularly the Northern PC.
