Athula Wijewickrema - a name synonymous in the game of weightlifting
being the holder of many national records, made a winning debut in
powerlifting by lowering two national records at the open national
powerlifting championship organised by the Sri Lanka Powerlifting
Association and sponsored by Shakthi Club and held at Jeewan Kumaratunga
Hall in Wadduwa over the weekend.
Athula Wijewickrema representing the Kandy Young Men's Christian
Association and competing in the 105 kilogram body weight category
registered 260 kgs in the squat which is 35 kgs more than the existing
national record aggregated a total of 620 kgs which eclipsed the
existing record of 570 kgs by 50 kilograms.
Making his debut in powerlifting in the evening of his sports career
at the age of 46, he displayed in no uncertain terms he has a lot of
strength and skills left in him.
The breakdown of his performance in this meet as squat 260 kgs. Ben
Press 130 kgs Dead lift 230 kgs. Total 620 kgs.
Athula Wijewickrema is an international medallist in weightlifting
and has been the national coach for many years and has also been
physical trainer for rugby teams at Kingswood College and St. Anthony's
College and his debut in powerlifting will enhance his reputation as the
master in the iron game.
He said that he hopes to continue powerlifting for some time despite
age catching up with him and four years from now he will be turning
fifty. He says he wants to set up example to the youths of the country
as age is no barrier to sports if you have the physical fitness and the
will to perform. |
