Violence-free PC polls anticipated

Officials of the Elections Department said they expect the forthcoming Provincial Council polls to be relatively violence-free although they have opened a Police coordination unit with 10 district liaison officers to receive complaints.

A spokesperson for the Elections Secretariat said a senior officer has been appointed by the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to receive complaints on polls-related violence and incidents of breach of the law.

He said, “Even we can be informed of instances of misuse of state property,” adding that this desk will operate 24/7 until the elections are over.

The complaints hot-line is 0112877612 and complaints fax is 0112877613.

“A complaint will be channelled immediately to the police stations and the Commissioner may send his own regional officers, if necessary, to the scene to look into any complaints,” the spokesperson said. There had been no reports of elec tion related violence up to yesterday.
