Nalanda Ranaviru Upahara 2013
At a time when there was a growing negative consensus towards the
unitary status of the country and the armed forces, the junior Old Boys'
Association of Nalanda College launched the Nalanda Ranaviru Upahara in
2002 to paytribute to the peacekeepers of the nation.
The event reached its zenith in 2009 when the Sri Lankan Security
Forces triumphed with a supreme victory over the terrorists. The event
was held on a grand scale and the chief guest in 2009 was the Secretary
to the Ministry of Defence, Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The commanders of the
three forces, the police and the civil defence force also graced the
event.
At the 2013 event, floral tributes will be paid at the Nalanda
College War Memorial commemorating 41 old Nalandians who laid down their
lives in bringing freedom to the nation. A special event planned for the
year is the renovation of a ward at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital
seeking to invoke merit on the demised war heroes. The families of war
heroes who laid down their lives for the motherland will be honoured
guests at the event, coinciding with the aim of Nalanda Ranaviru Upahara
to provide solace and comfort to the kith and kin of the heroes.
Old Nalandians of the armed forces who are currently in service and
those who have retired will participate at the event.
The Nalanda Junior Old Boys' Association hopes this endeavour will
plant the seeds of gratitude in the young students and inspire them to
hold dear the sacrifices made by the valiant heroes in keeping this land
peaceful and resplendent for the future generation.
