Preferential numbers for polls candidates this week

The Elections Department will issue preferential numbers to the Provincial Council election candidates this week.

A spokesperson for the Department said they were in the process of preparing the lists of names in alphabetical order in all three languages. The poll gazette carrying the preferential numbers is to be published this week.

A total of 3,785 persons from recognised political parties and independent groups received nominations to contest the Northern, North Western and Central Provincial Council elections on September 21. Persons numbering 2,279 from political parties and 1,506 from independent groups are eligible to receive the district preferential numbers to contest the election.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth polls observers have already flown in and commenced pre-poll monitoring with emphasis on the Nothern Province.

The Elections Commissioner is expected to issue guidelines for polls observers on their conduct on polls day.
