LG launches sharper-display tablet

LG Electronics Inc of Korea, launched its first tablet with a high-resolution screen, joining global rivals trying to take on Apple Inc's dominance in the popular small-sized tablet market.

LG hopes the new tablet with a sharper display will help it gain traction during the year-end holiday season .

LG has also added a feature that allows users to check and send messages received by their Android smartphone from the tablet.

The new tablet will be introduced in 30 countries. Abans is the agent in Sri Lanka for LG Electronics and home appliances.


Hameedia launches 'Concept 2014'

'Concept 2014', a fashion show conceptualised by men's fashion consultant Fouzul Hameed will be held on Sunday, October 20 at the Hilton.

An auction will also be conducted to support the My Friend project, a CSR initiative by Hameed.

'Concept 2014' will showcase ten collections ranging from casual, sport, smart casual, fusion, office, ethnic, red carpet, formal to semi-formal ranges.


Seylan Bank marks Children's Day

Seylan Bank is celebrating World Children's Day this month with the launch of a Game App ' Tikiri Gift Rush' which could be played on a computer, an android smart phone device or on Facebook.

This is an interesting game where the player has to catch falling coins and collect them into a net.

Deputy General Manager, Marketing, Tilan Wijeyesekera said, "This Game App has a dual function. Apart from its entertainment value, it also serves as a tool to encourage the savings habit among children."


CASL student wins Best Paper Presenter award

A student of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) recently won the Best Paper Presenter Award at the International CA Students Conference organised by the Board of Studies of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

A final year student of CA Sri Lanka, Ms. Buddhi Pathiraja, was part of a 12-member delegation from Sri Lanka. She presented her paper during the conference's first technical sessions.

The conference in Kolkata, India, revolved around the theme 'Accounting Professional - Ace, Astute and Adaptable'.

Ms. Pathiraja functions as an executive of Corporate Finance and Advisory Services of BDO Consulting (Pvt) Ltd.

Her accolades include winning the World Top Paper Prize for Corporate Finance at the final level exams conducted by ABE (UK).


Siromi Wickramasinghe joins HNB Assurance Board

Chairperson of HDFC Bank, Siromi Wickramasinghe has been appointed to the Board of Directors of HNB Assurance PLC from October 2.

Siromi Noelle Wickramasinghe is an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court since 1975 and has 32 years of experience in the banking sector.

She is also a Company Secretary and a Commissioner for Oaths and has extensive international exposure with experience in global industry best practices. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, UK. She joined Hatton National Bank in 1981 and held many managerial positions and was a Deputy General Manager at the time of leaving in 2007. She was also the General Manager and CEO at Lankaputhra Development Bank for 18 months.

 

 


Maliban wins three gold awards

Maliban Biscuit Manufactories clinched three awards at the 21st Annual NCE Export Awards, 2012, recently.

The awards won by Maliban include Gold awards for the Best Performer in Emerging Markets, Best Small and Medium Scale Exporter and Confectionery and Beverage sub-sector - Industry sector. The NCE Export Awards which commenced in 1993, are held annually by the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka to recognise and reward the achievements of the export industry. One-hundred-and-forty-six applications were evaluated, this year, by an expert panel of judges under the criteria of export performance, market and product development, value addition, effective management of marketing and capital, brand marketing and innovation.


Volvo conducts Fuelwatch competition

Swedish Trading Company, dealers for Volvo trucks and buses, conducted the first ever Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch competition in Sri Lanka recently.

The company had invited 35 drivers of Volvo trucks operating on various routes to take part in the competition.

"The results among the five finalists showed a remarkable spread of 34 percent in fuel efficiency. Applied to the operating costs of a transportation business this could add up to sizeable savings," a company spokesman said.

The drivers were given tips on improving fuel efficiency and on getting the maximum benefit from Volvo trucks.

Managing Director of Volvo Trucks, Asia Oceania Sales for South Asia, Larbi Hbil said, "Fuelwatch is a competence development effort, it helps drivers to improve skills, to drive in a safer and more fuel efficient way."
