Clinch Marie Musaeus Higgins Trophy:Ladies rowers make clean sweep

Ladies College, Colombo 7 made a clean sweep by winning all nine events including the exhibition C Fours and prestigious Boat Race in their 10thAnnual Regatta against Musaeus College which were run on the Beira Lake Course, Colombo yesterday. The Ladies rowers were richly rewarded when they received the Marie Musaeus Higgins Trophy after their grand display.

Ladies College captured the day's last event – Boat Race with a huge lead as the Flower Road School girls comprising of Dharini Samarasinghe, Thiranya Fernando, Isabella Sansoni, Ashani Welikala and Marihah Idroos earned 12 points clocking 4:02 seconds before the Musaeus girls reached the finishing mark in 4:18 seconds.

Skipper Ashani Welikala combined with vice captain Dharini Samarasinghe, both 18-year-old students to win by 10 seconds in the day's third event, B Pair. The second year coloursmen of the Flower Road school clocked 4:23 minutes to bag four points.

In the penultimate event, both teams offered a little bit of excitement for everyone as the decision was made by a hair's breath. The B Four crew of Anoushka Tissera, Tarea Karunaratne, Davina Koch, Chanika Goonethilaka and Ashmitha Guneratne, who was at the same stage in the middle of the course, cruised to victory at the last moment competing in the inside course as they reached the finishing line in four minutes and five seconds.

Ishara Abbey joined Anika Ahamed to win the B Double Sculls in 4:19 seconds to earn five points and increased the deficit to 32-0 at the end of the sixth event.

Results:

A Scull: Yellani Rasthaputhra 4:20 seconds (6 points)
B Scull: Ishara Abbey 4:20 (2 points)

A Pair: Isabella Sansoni, Thiranya Fernando (4:20 (8 points)
B Pair: Dharini Samarasinghe, Ashani Welikala 4:23 (4 points)

A Double Sculls: Yellani Rasthaputhra, Anoushka Tissera 4:16 (7 points)
B Double Sculls: Ishara Abbey, Anika Ahamed 4:19 (5 points)

C Four (exhibition): Yellani Rasthputhra, Nashali Goonethilaka, Ishara Abbey, Anika Ahamed, Thehani Walpola 4:19

B Four: Anoushka Tissera, Tarea Karunaratne, Davina Koch, Chanika Gonnetihlaka, Ashmitha Guneratne 4:05 (8 points)

A Four (Boat Race): Dharini Samarasinghe, Thiranya Fernando, Isabella Sansoni, Ashani Welikala (captain), Marihah Idroos 4:02 (12 points).
