Wind power project in the pipeline
A feasibility study will be carried out soon in connection with the
setting up of a wind power project in the North Western coastal town of
Mannar, General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board Shavindra
Fernando has said.The proposed project is expected to generate 200
Megawatts of electricity.
The feasibility study would be carried out as part of Sri Lanka's
attempt to turn to renewable electricity as a sustainable solution to
the energy crisis. The study is expected to be completed next year.
The Government plans to increase the wind power capacity to 10
percent of the island's total power generation. Sri Lanka expects Asian
Development Bank assistance to launch the project.Several small-scale
wind power plants are already in operation in the Kalpitiya area of the
North Western coastal belt. A 30 Megawatt plant operated by Senok Wind
Power located in Kalpitiya area has been in operation since 2010.
