Prawn harvest in full swing
Nearly 40,000 kilos of prawn are harvested in the Batticaloa lagoon
every month. Around 250 canoes are engaged in the prawn harvest and each
fisherman nets six to seven kilos of prawn daily, Assistant Director of
Batticaloa District Fisheries Department D. George said.
He said that they harvest prawn in Kattankudi, Oorani, Pillayaradi
and some other areas along the Batticaloa lagoon, George said that the
prawn season has begun in the Batticaloa district. Harvesting prawn has
turned out to be the main source of income for fishermen in the region.
Prawn is the second preferred food of people in the Batticaloa
district. A large number of prawn vendors sell prawns along the road
close to the Batticaloa town, Kattankudi and some other areas in the
district, he said.
