Former president of SLSCA Alles' funeral tomorrow

The founder of D.S. Senanayake College and Gateway College, the late R.I.T. Alles, is a former President of the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and ex-President of the Association of Cricket Umpires Sri Lanka.

Great Educationist Ralph Ignatius Thomas Alles started his teaching career at Royal College, Colombo 7. RIT, as he was affectionally known, was instrumental in helping Royal to win the De Zoysa Challenge and the Hermal Loos Challenge trophies in cadetting, the Sir John Tarbet trophy in athletics and the SLSCA Under 16 Cricket championship.

In community work, Alles stood out as the much accepted Secretary of the Royal College Teachers Guild whose members acknowledged him as one who promoted the welfare activities of its members. He later founded D.S. Senanayake College which has now turned into one of the leading schools in the country that has produced outstanding sportsman, including former Sri Lanka captains Aravinda de Silva and Hashan Tillakaratne and Test players Kosala Kuruppuarachchi and Pubudu Dassanayake.

On his retirement, he found Gateway School which has now turned out to be one of the most sought-after international schools in the country.

RIT had served as Secretary to the Ministry of Education (1989 to 1993), tutorial staff of Royal College (1956 to 1966), Colombo 7, the founder Principal of D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo 7 (February 10, 1967), Ex. Director of Studies, Zahira College , Colombo 10, the founder Principal of Gateway International School and Chairman, Gateway Group with his loving wife Rohini Alles, a former teacher of Royal Junior School and Royal College.

The remains of late R. I. T. Alles which now lie at his residence on Kuruppu Lane in Borella will be taken to D. S. Senanayake College at 8.30 am tomorrow. The body will be kept in the school until 12 noon. The remains will thereafter be taken to Gateway College in Rajagiriya where it will lie from 1 pm onwards.

The final religious ceremonies will be conducted at the Gateway College premises, commencing at 2.30 pm. The funeral procession will leave Gateway College in Rajagiriya at 4 pm to the General Cemetery (Kanatta) in Borella for cremation scheduled for 5.30 pm tomorrow.
