Pension impersonators to be taken to task

Those who impersonate government pensioners and state employees who indulge in malpractices would be dealt with severely from this year.

The Department of Pensions and the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs will deploy over 150 experienced investigators to nab the offenders.

Instances when millions of public funds have been misappropriated have been reported.

Director General of Pensions Sunil Hettiarachchi said that there are 539,000 pensioners at present and the government pays Rs. 140 billion on pensions annually.

This pension bill amounts to 12.06 percent of the total government revenue.

The Department of Pensions calls upon the public provide information leading to pension misappropriations.

This devolves as a national responsibility on all patriotic people said the Kurunegala District Government Pensioners Association president A.M. Jayasekara at a government pensioners meeting at Bingiriya.
