Two more popular milk products under scrutiny
by Carol Aloysius
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has called for an immediate
investigation of two popular milk products following increasing
complaints from the public.
“We have received a number of complaints from the public, including
prominent hoteliers and restaurants in the city on the low quality of
these two brands which are found in most supermarkets.”
“We have ordered an immediate investigation and asked our officers to
get samples of the two brands. They will be analysed in an accredited
laboratory to see whether the manufacturers had adhered to our
requirements under the Consumer Act”, Deputy Regional Director CAA,
Asela Bandara told the Sunday Observer.
Apart from the quality of the product, they would also check whether
the products had displayed the date of manufacture, expiry dates,
nutritional value and the address of the manufacturer.
“As it is just two brands, we could release the results of our
investigations soon. If regulations have been flouted, the packets will
be withdrawn and the manufacturing company will be penalised”, he said.
The CAA on the instructions of Cooperatives and Internal Trade
Minister Johnston Fernando is also stepping up raids on other consumer
products including food items after large stocks of potatoes, onions,
fruits, dhal, sprats, sardines and weaning foods unfit for human
consumption were detected. |
