India's memorable day - bundle out Aussies for 83 and win by 59 runs

G.R. Visvanath made the top Indian score of 114 runs in the first innings total of 237 in the first innings.

Sunil Gavaskar made 70 in the Indian second innings of 324 that helped India a great deal in their victory bid.

FLASHBACK: Melbourne cricket ground is one ground that the Indian cricketers will not forget for a long, long time. It was on that ground that they got Australia out for that cheap score of 83 in the second innings to register a handsome win by 59 runs in the 1980-81 series.

India, batting first, were out for a moderate total of 237 with G.R. Viswanath making a fine 114 for them. Then it was Australia's turn and Australia made a handsome first innings total of 419 with Greg Chappell making 76 and Allan Border making the three-figure score of 124 in the first innings.

So, it was a handsome first innings lead 182 for the Australians and the Aussies may well have been thinking of victory. However, this was not to be, as the Indian cricketers looked a determined lot in the second innings, with Sunil Gavaskar getting into his stride with a polished display of 70 runs and C.P.S. Chauhan who was out for a 'duck' in the first innings made it good in his second turn with 85. The Indian opening combination of Gavaskar and Chauhan had that superb partnership of 165 which must surely have made the Aussies somewhat worried.

But apart from the Indian openers Gavaskar and Chauhan and for a lesser extent D.B. Vengsarker (41), G.R. Visvanath (30) and S.M. Patil (36) the others didn't do anything worthwhile and India were out for 324 in their second innings.

The lead that the Aussies got in their first innings (182) was all that they could muster as they were shot out for the unbelievable score of 83 in their second innings with India's pace are Kapil Dev making inroads to the Aussies batting line-up with a haul of 5 for 28 in a devastating spell of pace bowling to turn the match in India's favour. So, it was India's joyful day to celebrate with that victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground that day.

Dennis Lillee had a haul of 4 for 65 in the Indian first innings total of 237. In the second innings he took 4 for 104 in the Indian second innings total of 324.

Allan Border made the top score of 124 in the Australia first innings score of 419 runs.

Greg Chappell made 76 in the Australian first innings total of 419, but in the 2nd innings he failed to score and Australia lost the match by 59 runs.

India’s Kapil Dev was in fine ball with the ball and had a haul of 5 for 28 when Australia was shot out for 83 in their second innings.
