Cover: Solitaire

Our photographer Sudam Gunasinghe was at hand to take this photograph of a girl not knowing what she wants to do with a dried branch in her hand.

What is significant is she is standing on the shores of the Patanangala beach in Yala National Parkwhich was a spot that went under water during the tsunami in 2004.













 

Back cover: Jaffna water fort

Our staff photographer Thilak Perera captured a picture of this fort standing sentinel at a spot in Jaffna.

The water fort, known as Hammenhiel, meaning heel of the ham is at the entrance to the Jaffna lagoon. It guarded the passage by water, to the castle fort in Jaffna.
