Azwer refutes JVP allegations

It is sheer nonsense to say that that palakayan (those who govern) are behind communal disturbances.

This government under President Mahinda Rajapaksa brought terrorism to an end defeating the LTTE, the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world. It was elected by all sections of the population and would be the last to dabble in communal politics.

It is this government that ushered in an era of peace, said Monitoring MP of the Ministry of Mass Media and Information and Member of the Parliament Council, A. H. M Azwer MP in a statement referring to certain remarks reported in the press purpoted to have been made by JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake at a Muslim youth gathering recently.

Making inference to a remark made by Dissanayake at the meeting, has been quoted as saying that Muslims should react if their community is attacked, is tantamount to rabble-rousing.

Anura Kumara has conveniently forgotten that in the 1980s it was the JVP that created a holocaust raising communal issues against the Tamils and other minortiy groups.

Muslim Ministers and MPs are ever vigilant in bringing to the notice of the Government any untoward incidences and prompt action has been taken to dispel any fears in the minds of the Muslims. The government which counts on the Muslim votes as well will not be so naïve to raise communal issues as ascribed by Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Dissanayake's remarks proves part of a conspiracy against the Government, as he has become an agent of American imperialism.

However, it should be noted that contrary to the principles followed by the JVP, the government has ensured a peaceful atmosphere in the country, so that even the JVP leader, who professes totalitarian ideals has the freedom to mount a stage to express his ideas freely. This is democracy well in practice," Azwer said.
