Merill runs best 100m hurdles after Kulawansa:

Manoji sets up hammer throw Sri Lanka record

Manoji Amarasinghe of Sri Lanka Army set up a Sri Lanka record in the women's hammer throw event on the first day of Sri Lanka's Selection Trial for this year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, which was held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.


Christine Sonali Merill, who clocked 13.81 seconds in the 100m women's hurdles event, competes at the Selection Trial for Commonwealth Games at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

Amarasinghe's landmark distance was 47.31 metres. She erased the previous record of 40.25 metres set by GLA Galhena in 2011.

Christine Sonali Merill, recorded the best 100m hurdles record after Sri Lanka's champion women's hurdler Sriyani Kulawansa.

The USA-based Sri Lankan Olympian, clocked 13.81 seconds, becoming the first hurlder to run under 14.00 seconds in the 100m women's hurdles event after country's medal winning Sriyani Kulawansa.

However, Kulawansa's national record is 12.91 seconds set in 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

The Sri Lanka national record holder of the 400m hurdles with 56.45 seconds, Merill will be competing in her pet event today, the second day of the Selection Trial.

Merill recorded 58.25 seconds in the 400m hurdles pet event at Aliso Viejo, USA in April this year, and followed by her Personal best of 13.83 seconds in the 100m hurdles in La Jolla USA in the same month this year.

Meanwhile, Kupun Kushantha of Nalanda College missed the IAAF qualifying standard in hair's breath in heats. Kushantha Kupun Kushantha, who competed in the 800m heats yesterday, missed the IAAF junior qualifying standard of 1:50.50 second winning the heat.

The 19-year-old boy, who clocked 1:50.60 minutes in the heats, will be competing in the men's 800m finals today.
