Trinity determined to make a win on May 24 at Pallekele

Big Rugby Clash... Trinity College principal Brig. Udaya Ariyaratne says, all arrangements have been finalized for the second leg of the 70th Bradby Shield game between Trinity and Royal to be played on May 24th at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekele under the distinguished patronage of S.V.Ranasinghe.

Brigadier Ariyaratne says that the game is bound to be exiting with the growth of schools rugby in the country.

Brigadier Ariyaratne hopes that a good game will be seen by the large crowd that is expected at the match. The Trinity Principal extends his best wishes to both teams.

Trinity, who won the ‘first leg’, goes out firm favourites to clinch victory in the ‘return’ to clinch the fourth consecutive Bradby Shield win.A large crowd is once again expected and a wonderful game is expected.

Trinity and Royal are preparing for what Brig. Udaya Ariyaratne has labeled ‘the most important schools 15s rugby game, as host together with the staff and old boys has done the best in organizing wise. Traditionally this match between the two schools, has been the battle for exciting rugby, Looking ahead to the next weekend’s game, Trinity with a lot of strong support available from the touch-line to reinforce the effort.

This will be a very tough game, it is a defining match for the two teams to respect the game, both teams, if you all play well can win., but the spectators expect a much better game than the first leg.

So, this time Trinity College have invited their 1976 captain S.V.Ranasinghe to come in as the chief guest for the Kandy game. ‘S.V.’, as he was popularly known was a fine fly half and played first for the junior team and later for senior side in 1973 at the age of sixteen years.

And he had the privilege of leading in 1976, that year he led the Kandy City Schools XV, and also was in the Outstation Schools team for the Cratine Cup game against Colombo Schools.

In 1974, he was in Trinity C.Y. Ching Snr’s. unbeaten team, which team beat Wesley 59/0, St Josephs 78/0, Zahira 48/0, St.Anthony’s 64/3, St Thomas 70/8, St Peter’s 54/7, Dharmaraja 78/0, Ananda 84/0, Thurston 52/0, Vidyaratha 118/0 and Royal 18-3 and 12-9.

1975 Trinity played under Rohan Sourjah, he had to be out for the first two games due injuries, and Senu U Swan led the side, that side had players like S. Niranjan Ranasinghe, Chang Yu Ching jnr., Chang Lee Ching, S.Chandrasekrana, Ravi Balasuriya are some of the players who came to my mind, this year they were down with lot of injures and did not fare well.

Then in 1976, S.V. Ranasinghe led the side, and his team comprised of players like T.H. Hapugoda was a fine forward, Ravi Balsuriya he too played as a forward but he started first as a back division player, D.S. Weerasinghe a top class runner, J.H. Congreve was also good in his play, Janak Kiridena - a attacking forward with lot of rugby sense, P.S.Dinesh, P.E.G de Silva, S.A.P. Samarasekara, A.Thatchinmoorty, N.Gamage a good forward, G.D. Weerasinghe, Chulla Ellepola fine tackler, Y.E.Wong, M. Nazeem, Kamal Deen a classy center-three-quater, Samdha Ariyaratne brother of the present Trinity Principal was a crack player excelling in tackling, Jan Tissera and the side was coached by Col. Bertie Dias, that year. Trinity lost the Bradby first leg 36-0 and the second leg 25-6.
