70th Bradby Shield game between Trinity and Royal to be played on May
24th at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekele under the
distinguished patronage of S.V.Ranasinghe.
Brigadier Ariyaratne says that the game is bound to be exiting with
the growth of schools rugby in the country.
Brigadier Ariyaratne hopes that a good game will be seen by the large
crowd that is expected at the match. The Trinity Principal extends his
best wishes to both teams.
Trinity, who won the ‘first leg’, goes out firm favourites to clinch
victory in the ‘return’ to clinch the fourth consecutive Bradby Shield
win.A large crowd is once again expected and a wonderful game is
expected.
Trinity and Royal are preparing for what Brig. Udaya Ariyaratne has
labeled ‘the most important schools 15s rugby game, as host together
with the staff and old boys has done the best in organizing wise.
Traditionally this match between the two schools, has been the battle
for exciting rugby, Looking ahead to the next weekend’s game, Trinity
with a lot of strong support available from the touch-line to reinforce
the effort.
This will be a very tough game, it is a defining match for the two
teams to respect the game, both teams, if you all play well can win.,
but the spectators expect a much better game than the first leg.
So, this time Trinity College have invited their 1976 captain
S.V.Ranasinghe to come in as the chief guest for the Kandy game. ‘S.V.’,
as he was popularly known was a fine fly half and played first for the
junior team and later for senior side in 1973 at the age of sixteen
years.
And he had the privilege of leading in 1976, that year he led the
Kandy City Schools XV, and also was in the Outstation Schools team for
the Cratine Cup game against Colombo Schools.
In 1974, he was in Trinity C.Y. Ching Snr’s. unbeaten team, which
team beat Wesley 59/0, St Josephs 78/0, Zahira 48/0, St.Anthony’s 64/3,
St Thomas 70/8, St Peter’s 54/7, Dharmaraja 78/0, Ananda 84/0, Thurston

1975 Trinity played under Rohan Sourjah, he had to be out for the
first two games due injuries, and Senu U Swan led the side, that side
had players like S. Niranjan Ranasinghe, Chang Yu Ching jnr., Chang Lee
Ching, S.Chandrasekrana, Ravi Balasuriya are some of the players who
came to my mind, this year they were down with lot of injures and did
not fare well.
Then in 1976, S.V. Ranasinghe led the side, and his team comprised of
players like T.H. Hapugoda was a fine forward, Ravi Balsuriya he too
played as a forward but he started first as a back division player, D.S.
Weerasinghe a top class runner, J.H. Congreve was also good in his play,
Janak Kiridena - a attacking forward with lot of rugby sense, P.S.Dinesh,
P.E.G de Silva, S.A.P. Samarasekara, A.Thatchinmoorty, N.Gamage a good
forward, G.D. Weerasinghe, Chulla Ellepola fine tackler, Y.E.Wong, M.
Nazeem, Kamal Deen a classy center-three-quater, Samdha Ariyaratne
brother of the present Trinity Principal was a crack player excelling in
tackling, Jan Tissera and the side was coached by Col. Bertie Dias, that
year. Trinity lost the Bradby first leg 36-0 and the second leg 25-6.
