SLT staff helps schoolchildren in Kalawana
The IT Welfare Society of Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), the national
telecommunication service provider, carried out a CSR project in the
Kalawana area to provide educational items to needy schoolchildren and
educate the community on the importance of child protection.
The IT Society members provided shoes and books to 350 needy children
in 35 schools in the Kalawana area. Kalawana was selected since it is
one of the most underprivileged areas in terms of education and literacy
rates. The items were presented to the children recently at the Gamini
Madya Maha Vidyalaya.
It was organised with the help of the Zonal Director Sanath Priyantha
and the principals of the 35 schools.
Janaka Wakkumbura MP and SLT, Chief Information Officer D.W.R.
Wijeweera were the chief guests. Around 700 teachers, students, parents
and members of the SLT IT Welfare Society were also present.
Following the distribution of these items, an awareness program on
child protection was held for parents. The awareness session was
conducted by Janaka Kumara of the Child Protection Authority. Child
Protection is another CSR project that the company has embarked with the
National Child Protection Authority to educate and raise awareness among
the public on the increasing rate of child abuse in the country, which
needs urgent attention and action.
The parents were educated on aspects of child abuse, preventing child
abuse and safeguarding their children from such acts and the urgent need
for people to come together to protect children.
SLT actively supports and encourages its employees to initiate CSR
projects for those who are less fortunate. |
