Minister appoints 10 member committee

Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena has appointed a ten-member facts finding committee with regard to the increasing number of G.C.E. O/L Examination failures in Maths.

The Co-presidents of this committee comprises Prof. A.K.W. Jayawardena, the Vice Chancellor of University of Moratuwa and prof. Ranjith Premalal de Silva, the Vice Chancellor of Uva-Wellassa University.

Bandula Gunawardena, the Minister of Education has requested the committee to look for the reasons for students to fail this compulsory subject at the G.C.E. O/L Examination and the remedial measures be adopted to overcome this unhealthy situation. The school candidates and private candidates who fail the subject of Maths at the G.C.E. O/L Examination are unable to continue their higher studies or obtain government and private-sector jobs in the local job market. "Many students seem lacking memory power and logical power that are very essential to study Mathematics.

Students of today are more concerned in internet, TV and other activities.

They seem addicted too much over unnecessary things more than studies due to the ill-effects of globalization", said the Director of Education W.M. Balasooriya in Kurunegala recently.
