Miandad won the round over Sri Lanka!
By A.C. De Silva

Javed Miandad – the Pakistan skipper got a morale-boosting victory scoring
92 out of 301 for 4 wickets declared in the Pakistan second
innings which helped them on to victory.

A popular international victory... It is an accepted thing in sports
to quell on internal rebellion is by scoring a popular international
victory.

Sidath Wettimuny made a fine knock of 71 and together with Roy Dias (53)
out on 96 runs for the second wicket in Sri Lanka’s first
innings total of 344. |

D.S. De Silva – Took 4 for 102 in the Pakistan first innings
total of 396 and in the second innings. The took 3 for 99 in
the Pakistan score of 301 for 4 wickets declared. |

Roy Dias made 53 and with Sidath Wettimuny (71) was involved
in their fine second wicket partnership of 96 runs in the
first innings and helped Sri Lanka to made 344 runs. |
Javed Miandad - the somewhat controversial Pakistan cricket captain,
achieved a success that could well consolidate his position with a
204/run victory over the then Test toddler Sri Lanka at Karachi.
For Sri Lanka, its second venture into a Test match, was no different
than the first. On both occasions, the first against England and now
against Pakistan, the young cricketers from Emerald Isle flattered to
deceive.
A few days before the Test was to begin came the storm that clean
swept the somewhat complacement Pakistan cricket official off its feet.
Majid Khan, Imran Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Wasim Bari, Sarfraz Nawaz, Wasim
Raja, Sikander Bakht and Muddasar Nazar - well, almost the entire
Pakistan Test side came out with a press statement saying that they were
unwilling to play under the leadership of Miandad. The real reason
behind this strange and controversial decision was not made known.
Driven into a corner, the Pakistan Cricket Board came out punching.
It announced that the "rebel-eight" would not be considered for the
first for the first Test against Sri Lanka and then picked a team that
was best a bunch of raw but enthusiastic cricketers.
For a long while on the opening day, after Miandad had won the toss
and decided to bat, it did appear as if Pakistan would feel the absence
of its stars in a big way. Some spirited bowling by Sri Lanka's spirited
pace bowler Asantha de Mel, and leg spinner Somachandra de Silva left
the Pakistan innings tottering at six down for 126.
However, a comeback from Haroon Rashid and Tahir Naqqash produced a
seventh wicket partnership of 105 runs to steer Pakistan to safety. When
Pakistan were batting, Haroon Rashid added 127 runs for the ninth wicket
with Rashid Khan (59) before being run out for 153. Haroon recalled to
Test cricket also passed one more landmark - Competing 1,000 runs in
Tests with this century he became the 18th Pakistani to compete 1,000
runs in Tests.

Salim Malik – the third Pakistani to score a Test century on
debut. He made 100 not out in the second innings to take
Pakistan to 301 for 4 wickets and place them in a sound
position against Sri Lanka. |

Haroon Rashid of Pakistan scored a fine knock of 153 when
the chips were down and raised the total to 396 in the first
innings. |
Sri Lanka started off well with opener (71) and Roy Dias (53) taking
a heavy toll of the inexperienced Pakistani bowlers. Playing
entertaining cricket, Dias and Wettimuny plundered 96 in a fine second
wicket partnership. Later after Mendis had made a sparkling 54, Pakistan
managed to restrict Sri Lanka to 344 for a 52 - run first innings lead.
Mallik - the star
The fourth day belonged entirely to young debutant Salim Mallik and
skipper Javed Miandad as the duo took Pakistan to a position from which
they could go to a victory. Unbeaten 92 overnight, Miandad lost his
wicket at that score without adding to his overnight score of 92. Salim
Mallik went on to complete a fine century on debut, the youngest player
to do so. He was the third Pakistani to score a century on Test debut in
this Test and 48th player in Testannals to score a on Test debut - this
century against Sri Lanka.
Miandad declared the innings closed as the 18-year-old Mallika
completed the century, for which the youngster got the 'Man of the
Match' award later.
Sri Lanka needed 354 to win and at best it could hope was for a draw.
However, new ball bowlers Naqqash and Rashid Khan reduced Sri Lanka
to 41 for 3 at lunch and it would have taken some really resistant later
order batting to have forced a draw.
No resistance by Sri Lanka
The resistance never came. Just as against England at Colombo, Sri
Lanka lost even wickets in their second innings for 81 runs providing
Miandad with a morale-boosting victory.
Only the young Arjuna Ranatunga who was unfortunate to have "lost his
father the previous day, showed heroes of steel and defied the Pakistan
attack for a well made 33.
Qasim picked up 4 for 27, Wasim Raja grabbed a couple of tail-enders
and earlier Tahir Naqqash had 2 for 34 and Sri Lanka were all out for
149 in their second innings.
So, Pakistan won the Test against Sri Lanka by 204 runs.
