'Try and fail, but don't fail to try'

"You are utterly useless to the family. I think that you were not meant to be born into this family. See how well your sisters had performed. They bought fame and dignity to us," said Teena's dad.

Teena, who was the last child in a family of three was a forward-looking and a hard working child. She was good at studies, sports and aesthetics. The only failure was that she could not get through her Ordinary Level Examination to gain admission to a prestigious school. It was a great tragedy in her life as her parents were expecting her to perform well but she could not fulfil it.

Even though Teena was hard working and intelligent, she could not get good results. It was because she was engaged in extracurricular activities. She was having a good time playing with her friends at school. She could not avoid her friends.

After her Ordinary Level Examination, the days were so bitter. She was blamed by everyone around, especially at home. Her mum and dad were the ones who kept on shouting at her all the time. She sometimes hated to be at home.

"Teena, you should do your examination again for the second time. Did you understand what I am saying?" said her dad.

"Yes dad, I will do my examination again," said Teena.

Teena began studying with determination. She remembered one of her teachers often saying that one cannot be a success without failure in life. Failures are the pillars of success. Teena considered her failure in her first try as a stepping stone to success. Having this is mind, she started working hard day and night. She attended classes, did a lot of past papers and revision.

It was the day of her examination. She woke up early in the morning. She prayed, got the blessings from her parents and was well prepared to face the examination. She stepped out of the house and was in the examination hall in time.

She felt so nervous and her fingers were shivering and she had not felt like this before while she was doing it the first time.

Teena answered the question papers successfully and on her way back home, her dad asked "Teena how did you fare?"

"Well, it was easy, I did well," said Teena.

"This is what you told me the last time as well, I don't think that you will get through even this time," said her father.

Teena was not disheartened. She had the determination and courage. She was sure that she could get through this time so she kept quiet.

The examination was over and the days passed by. After about three months the results were released. Teena's heart was beating fast. She was excited to know what her results were.

" Hip hop hee, hip hop hee..." rang her mobile phone and it was her friend Fara.

Fara asked whether she saw her results on the internet. "No, not yet, I am going to see it," said Teena.

Teena's parents were surprised to see that their daughter was placed first in the island having secured distinctions in all the subjects. They began praising her.

Finally she was able to prove to her parents that failure is a stepping stone to success in life. One should not be disheartened if you fail once. We should try and try as the famous saying goes "Try and fail, but don't fail to try."
