Minister intervenes to curb bribery at RMV

Transport Minister Kumara Welgama has instructed the Commissioner of Motor Traffic to submit a report within a week on malpractices and bribery in the Motor Traffic Department.

Minister Welgama who visited the Motor Traffic Department in Werahera inspected the current situation of the Department.

The Minister said that he learnt of malpractices and bribery in the Department. When these are controlled better public service can be provided.

Minister Welgama held discussions with Motor Traffic Department Officers, police, drivers, training school members and vehicle licensing Department Officers.

It was also discussed about solving the shortcomings in the Department, the sources said.

Minister Welgama told the officers that steps will be taken to remove certain shortcomings in the Motor Traffic Act. Steps will also be taken to reduce the time period taken to issue driving license.

As the Police officers continuously engaged in duty in the Department they will be transferred every month the Minister said.

Motor Traffic Commissioner H.M. Harichandra was also present during the discussion.
