GOLF: Neesha Nirmalingam won the Ridgeways Cup golf championship for ladies organised by the Royal Colombo Golf Club and sponsored by Alankra Jewellery and worked off at the Royal Colombo golf course.

Ridgeway Cup is one of the most prestigious event in the golfing calendar for ladies and it originated in 1910 as the Figg Trophy and was later re-named as Ridgeway Cup in 1966. It is the first board event in the ladies golfing calendar and second in precedence only to the Club championship.

This keenly contested singles match play tournament drew tremendous attraction especially among the ladies as it was their .... tournament and they could show their prowess displaying their skills and some producing sparkling displays. This championship had been supported and sponsored by Alankara Jewellery over the years and that it attracted maximum participation including Alankara's own Roshini Sangani well known for her exploits at the Victoria golf course winning many titles.

Roshini Sangari played consistently well to beat the highly talented Niranjali Amerasinghe, Suni Nirmalingam and Kumari Herath all being top golfers with proven track record to reach the finals.

In the other half Neesha Nirmalingam played competent golf and overcame Ruwani Desinghe, Kishari Vethavanayagan and the ever persevering Chris Benjamin to challenge Roshini Sangani in the finals.

The finals turned out to be a gruelling affair with the proverbial 'No quarter asked nor given." Both golfers displayed very impressive golf and a very close fight was witnessed.

In the end it was Neesha Nirmallingam who turned out to be the winner edging out Roshini Sangani in the 13th hole to clinch the Ridgeway Cup for 2014.

This was a well organised championship for ladies and the sponsors Alankara Jewellery sported it to the hilt according Manori Jayakoddy of the RCGC.Roshini Sangani is no stranger to the golfing scene and plays the game whenever time permits despite her business schedule.

Her sister Niloo Jayatillake is s top golfer and does a lot for the promotion of golf in the country.
