by Anjalie Chandima Silva
Nalini Kodikara who held her maiden exhibition of paintings titled 'Pinsalata
Pinsidu Weva' in 2012 at the National Art Gallery in Colombo and Alfalaj
Hotel in Oman will launch her four maiden publications written
especially for children and youngsters at the BMICH on August 2.

and Dr. J.R.P. Sooriyapperuma will grace the occasion.
The four books Ali Henduwa, Sunami Mituro, Ekamuthu Weemata Kalayai
Me, Sitha Morana Thek are Godage publications.
The books are colourfully illustrated and are meaningful, attractive
and pleasing to the eye. Illustrations are done by the writer herself.
Kodikara has used her artistic talents to design the covers for all the
books. Her commitment, hard work and psychological approach can be
vividly seen in her story books.
There is no magic formula or secret recipe for writing. Everyone's
process is different. Some writers become successful in their very first
attempt. Some writers write a lot before they publish a book.
Most parents are potential writers of children's books. But everybody
does not write books. This is mainly because writing for children is a
difficult task.
Even the picture books demand conciseness, simplicity and a visual
sense. Good children's stories do not preach. Instead, they educate
children vicariously.
The structure of the books is simple with short sentences and
paragraphs. Simple dialogues are easy to understand.
The plot structure generates a fine rhythm to the stories. It is the
rhythm that largely determines the story's impact. The writer, works
with a multitude of themes. In each story she uses different techniques.
Some exceptional people can write good stories and draw wonderful
pictures. Kodikara falls into this categony. She was in charge of
preschools in Nigeria and Sri Lanka for over 25 years.
She has also conducted children's programs on television channels. |
