New Act to check child abuse

The National Child Protection Authority has decided to introduce a new Act to ensure the safety of children said National Child Protection Authority Chairman, Anoma Dissanayake at a meeting of schools in Kurunegala.

There is a sharp increase in the number of incidents on child abuse and violence inflicted on them, it is observed.

She said that new appointees to government departments or agencies dealing with children, should undergo a mental and physical fitness test as a prerequisite.

Instances where certain officials had allegedly indulged in child abuse had also been reported. This is why the National Child Protection Authority has decided to introduce a new Act to protect children.
