SPUR urges laws to curb NGOs
The Society for Peace, Unity and Human Rights for Sri Lanka (SPUR) a
non-governmental organisation based in Australia has urged the
Government to strengthen the NGO laws to be sync with the Indian Law,
emphasising that foreign funded NGOs are a direct threat to social
cohesion and peace and harmony of Sri Lanka.
SPUR, an NGO set up by Sri Lankans living in Australia has been
actively airing their opinion on issues of national interest while
exposing the activities of LTTE fronts worldwide.
It has pointed out that Indian Government has demonstrated commitment
to national sovereignty by having strict laws governing NGO activity.
“We also would like to point out that expensive vehicles, opulent
lifestyles, palatial accommodation and cocktail functions are not
considered by the Sri Lankan civil society to be ‘tangible benefits,”
the statement said.
It also said that if any NGO is found to have misused or swindled
donor monies, the full wrath of the law should be applied and if found
guilty, the perpetrators punished according to law. SPUR has accused
certain NGOs of funding media and other foreign agents parroting
misinformation, direct and indirect involvement with unethical
conversions and formation of radicalised religious groups, supporting of
LTTE terrorism and connivance with forces for a regime change
undermining a democratically elected government.
