Central Province win men’s and women’s hockey titles for 4th year

HOCKEY: Central Province hockey teams won the double of winning both mens and womens hockey championships for the fourth year running at the Inter-Provincial Hockey Championship organised by the Ministry of Sports in connection with the 40th National Sports Festival in Colombo.

The Central Province womens team won this title for a record 25th consecutive year while the mens team won it for the fourth year in running which is quite an achievement. In the men’s finals, Central Province heat North Western Province 4 – 1 after leading 2 – 0 at the breather.

Goal scorers for the champions were Kingswood schoolboy S.K. Obeysiri (2), Dhammika Abeyratne (1) and D.T. Phnditharatne (1). For North Western Province their solitary goal was scored by Shiran Nimantha.

In the women’s final, Central Province scored a run away 5 – 0 win over Southern Province after leading 4 – 0 at lemons.

The Central Province ladies win was fashioned by Madhushani Jayanetti (2). Susanthika Themiyadasa (2) and Buddhika Gunaratne (1) In the battle for third place Western Province beat Uva 11-0.
