Int'l Confab on 'Mainstreaming Migration'
The Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) has organised an
International Conference on 'Policies for Mainstreaming Migration into
Development in Sri Lanka' at the IPS Auditorium on August 14 at 9.00
a.m.
Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera will
inaugurate the confab.
International migration is a cross-cutting phenomenon in Sri Lanka,
where policy-makers are often grappling with the trade-off between
promoting international migration and protecting the well-being of
migrants and their families.
Thurstan OBA to fete Navy chief
The Old Boys' Association of Thurstan College, Colombo will
felicitate the new Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera on
August 16 at 7.00 p.m. at the Mirage Hotel, Marine Drive, Colombo 6.

Renal failure: Appeal for funds
Sudesh Jayawardene of Aluowitawatte, Pallegama, Deniyaya is suffering
from renal failure and needs transplantation as recommended by
Consultant Nephrologist A.L.M. Nazar of the Colombo National Hospital.
It has been estimated that the surgery would cost around Rs. Three
lakhs. A sum of Rs. 10,000 will have to be incurred monthly for the
resupply of fresh blood.
He appeals for financial assistance to meet the expenses.

Japanese Govt commends JASTECA Vice Patron
The Vice Patron of the Japan Sri Lanka Technical Cultural Association
(JASTECA), a trustee of the JASTECA Trust and one of Sri Lanka's senior
executives in the private sector, Lal de Alwis has received commendation
from the Government of Japan, in recognition of his outstanding
achievements in international fields and also for the promotion of
friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.
Lal de Alwis will formally accept the certificate of commendation
from the Ambassador of Japan, Nobuhito Hobo shortly.
Dearth of tax collectors

Local Government institutions in the North Western Province are
unable to collect almost Rs. 400 million in taxes as there is a shortage
of tax collectors.
There are 29 Pradeshiya Sabhas, three Urban Councils and one
Municipal Council in Kurunegala and the Puttalam districts.

Journalists' workshop tomorrow
A media workshop to create awareness among provincial journalists of
the development projects implemented in the Jaffna district will be held
in the Jaffna District Secretariat Auditorium tomorrow.
The workshop has been organised jointly by the Government Information
Department and Jaffna district Secretariat. Traditional Industries and
small enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda will be the
Chief Guest.
Jaffna District Secretary S. Arumainayagam, Kelaniya University Mass
Communication Head Prof. Ariyaratne Athugala, Eastern University,
Trincomalee Faculty Senior lecturer Dr. S. Raguram and editors from
