by Ranjan Anandappa
Over 872 entries have been received for the 92nd National Athletics
Championship to be held from August 12 to 14 at the Sugathadasa Stadium
commencing at 7 am each day. Anura Jayawickrema - the secretary of the
Ministry of Sports will be the chief guest.
With the Asian Games around the corner from September 19th to October
4th, 2014 in South Korea, the athletes will get another chance to prove
their prowess in preparation for the South Korean Asian Games.
In the recently concluded Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow,
Scotland, Sri Lanka managed only one silver medal. Hopefully, the Sri
Lankans should give a better performance. Sri Lanka for the first time
in the Asian Games history were unable to win a single medal at the last
Asian Games held in China 2010.
With T20 cricket, Seven-a-side Rugby included in this years Games,
the Lankans are confident of winning medals.
There are 38 events, 19 each for men and women scheduled to be worked
out at the Asian Games.
