Richard Hadlee helped Kiwis to win 5-day Test against England in 3 days

It was to be as a five-day "Test'. But it did not go that far this Test match between New Zealand and England at Christchurch and New Zealand won by an innings and 132 runs. It was to as a five-day Test, but it was all over in three days on February 5 in 1984. Actually, the match lasted 12 hours and two minutes across three days.

Richard Hadlee, New Zealand’s top wicket-taker who knocked England out of the series.

Thereby New Zealand avenged its Lord's defeat in 1958 in which it was dismissed for 47 for 74 - a local less than 100 in both innings.

At Christchurch, New Zealand won by an innings and 132 runs. It was for the first time in a century that England was dismissed for a total less than 100 in both innings. England were out for 82 and 93 in their two innings.

It was that champion medium pace bowler Richard John Hadlee that made this victory so simple, getting 3 for 16 and 5 for 28 and with such telling effect did Hadlee bowl that England were out for such law scores in their two innings.

It turned out to be a glorious match for Hadlee, as he made that wonderful knock of 99 runs when New Zealand batted first and made 307 in their first innings. It was undoubtedly the star performer as he joined as the 36th player in the '99 Club'. It was the 38th instance of a batsman of a batsman missing a Test century by a solitary run in the total of 976 Test played till then.

In every major victory of New Zealand in Test cricket, Hadlee has had a significant role to play, save in the Cindrella win at Headingly in 1983 in which Hadlee ironically went wicketless. He deserved many, but got none. In New Zealand's first ever victory over Australia at Christchurch in 1974, Hadlee had 7 for 134.

Then Hadlee had eleven for 58 and it helped New Zealand to down India to level the home series in 1976.

Here's some of Richard Hadlee's achievements:

February 1976 vs India at Wellington: New Zealand won by an innings with Hadlee (in his 9th Test) taking 7 for 23 in the second innings for a match haul of 11 for 58.

February 1978 vs England at Wellington. Hadlee's match aggregate of 10 for 100.

February 1980 vs West Indies at Dunedin. Hadlee's match aggregate of 11 for 102.

February 1984 vs England at Christchurch. Another facet of Hadlee's all-round skills. Apart from taking 8 wickets in the match, Hadlee hit a thunderous 99 off only 81 balls with 18 fours- an impressive 72.7 percent of his hurricane knock coming in boundary-strokes.

March 1984 vs Sri Lanka at Colombo. Hadlee's 5 wickets in each innings for an overall tally of 10 for 102 remains New Zealand's best match aggregate in any Test against Sri Lanka.

November 1985 vs Australia at Brisbane. Hadlee's zenith of success. His 9 for 52 in the first innings and match aggregate of 15 for 123 are both National records for the best by a New Zealand bowler in a Test against any country in all Test cricket.

December 1985 vs Australia at Perth. Hadlee again took 5 for 65 and 6 for 90 for match figures of 11 for 155. His 33 wickets (averaging in incredibly low 12.55 in this 3-Test rubber represents the best for New Zealand in any Test series played against any country, home or away, whether of 3 Tests or 4 Tests or 5 Tests.

Here's the scores of the Kiwi-England 5-day Test where the match was over in 3 days.
