No vet, say farmers

Dairy farmers in Laggala and Wilgamuwa area are inconvenienced as there is no veterinary surgeon. This area has become the main fresh milk producing division in the Matale district. Over 2,000 farmers are engaged in the industry.

At present farmers have to go to Hasalaka to get treatment for their animals. They appeal to the provincial authorities to appoint a veterinary surgeon soon.

Sunshine Camp for differently-abled children on Aug 23, 24

The 42nd Sunshine Camp for differently-abled children organised by the Dehiwala YMCA will be held on August 23 to 24 at the Dehiwala YMCA premises. Around 300 children and their parents are expected to participate at the annual event for the over 40 years to bring Sunshine into the lives of the children.

The two-day program has been supported every year by generous donors, benefactors and friends who have showed not only their concern but also their loving compassion for the children.

Appeal for O+ve kidney

Fifty-four year old Vipula Sarath Bandara, a Royalist of '74 Batch is in need of O+ kidney for urgent transplantation, as recommended by Consultant Nephrologist of the National Institute for Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, Colombo 10, Dr. Anura Hewageegana.

Free cataract surgery by Vision 2020 today

Do you know that you can give vision to a person for just Rs. 5,000, almost half the cost of a nightouting or for a birthday bash?

Vision 2020 Unit of the Ministry of Health has so far, diagnosed 6,000 patients in Colombo, who are in need of cataract surgery and in the waiting list to receive the lens and medical packs for the operation. Vision 2020 has signed a MoU with several leading private hospitals in Colombo to perform the surgery free, with donors who will supply the lens.

For the entire surgery, it costs less than Rs. 5,000 for a good quality collapsible lens and a pack, whereas it costs around Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000 in the private sector.

A UK-based engineer Dr. Velautham Sarveswaran with the assistance from the Youth Progressive Foundation of Colombo, has arranged for 200 lenses for the Vision 2020 program, for surgery on the needy at the National Eye Hospital, Colombo today.

Dr. Sarveswaran had earlier donated 300 lenses for free surgeries in Mullaitivu and Mannar districts and hopes to make it a islandwide program shortly.
