Syria refugee count tops three million - UN

The United Nations says more than three million
people have fled Syria's civil war, creating what it calls “the
biggest humanitarian emergency of our era.” In a statement Friday,
the U.N. refugee agency said one million of those refugees fled in
the past year alone from the “increasingly horrifying conditions” in
Syria.

Indian woman fights and kills leopard

A 56-year-old Indian woman is recovering in
hospital after killing a leopard that attacked her as she tended her
fields armed only with a sickle. The woman told Indian broadcaster
CNN-IBN that she battled with the leopard for half an hour on Sunday
before finally delivering a killer blow with her sickle.

Ukraine ‘slipping out of control’, warns Germany

The crisis in eastern Ukraine is “slipping out
of control” and needs to be reined in to avoid direct military
confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, Germany has warned.
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke as the EU is poised
to consider more sanctions on Russia.
