Hong Kong pro-democracy activists recaptured parts of a core protest zone early on Saturday, defying riot police who had tried to disperse them with pepper spray and baton charges.

Putin to hold talks in Milan

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Milan to meet his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko and key EU leaders to discuss the crisis in eastern Ukraine. The leaders of the UK, Germany, France and Italy are expected to press Mr Putin to do more to end the fighting.

Polls could be delayed until 2016, says Thai leader
