The nature lover
Winner:

He was poor, but he loved nature
He never expected praise or fame
He grew and grew trees until the end
Of his simple pathetic life.
A few knew about him
A few talked to him, he never had friends
But nature was his best friend
He was poor and no friends he had.
The trees he grew, grew fast and healthy
But the old man grew old, day by day
He was happy and contented about his life
Though he didn’t have any friends or foes.
Nobody knew, nobody saw his death
The neighbours who loved his trees
Buried him in the grave beside his house
His body lays amidst the soil in which his trees grow.

Sunlight
Winner:
The light we get from the sun is called sunlight. We get it during
day time. It gives us warmth. It helps to dry clothes, spices, seeds,
fish, lime and rice.
Sunlight makes us healthy by giving vitamin ‘D’ and killing germs. We
can’t live without sunlight.

An interesting book I read
Winner:
It was a Monday. I went to the library with my friends. When I was
looking at a book, one of my friends showed me a nice book. I took it
into my hand. Its cover page was colourful and the story was Secret
Seven. My friend asked me to borrow it from the library and read it.
Then I borrowed it.
I went home and started to read it. Oh! How interesting it was. Lots
of interesting things were included in the book. I read it carefully. I
never missed even a word in the book.
The book was written by Enid Mary Blyton. There was some information
about this popular author at the end of the book. She was a wonderful
woman because she had a wide knowledge to write books.
The Secret Seven series is full of adventure. There were seven main
characters in the book. They were children. They were joyful and
friendly.
This is the best book that I had ever read.

My favourite TV program

Winner:
My favourite television program is the Isiwara Wedaduru teledrama. It
is a beautiful teledrama. It is telecast on Rupavahini from 6.30 p.m. -
7.30 p.m.
It tells an ancient story in Korea. I like this teledrama because it
also has information about ayurvedic treatment. I never miss watching
this teledrama. I feel sad when I miss it. There are many actors in this
teledrama. They are Korean actors. The main actor is Dek Koliyon. The
other actors are Miyonyan Wedaduru, Sonha and Suki Kumariya. It helps in
my studies too.

My ambition
Winner:
Everyone in this world has an ambition. My ambition is to become an
engineer. An engineer does a great service to the country. He plays a
vital role in the development of a nation.
There are many fields in engineering. Some of them are mechanical,
automobile and electrical. An engineer has to undergo training in the
field he likes to work.
I was inspired by the lesson in my English text book about the
construction of the Brooklyn Bridge connecting New York and Long Island.
It shows perseverance and commitment of two engineers, a father and son.
An engineer works hard. He can help in the civil, economic and
intellectual activity in the country. An engineer learns to integrate
scientific and engineering knowledge to contribute towards the economic
growth of a country. A country needs the services of engineers to build
roads, bridges, factories, industrial sites and also to maintain them.
If I become an engineer, I will do a great service to my country.
Becoming an engineer is not easy. I must be good at Science and
Mathematics. These are my favourite subjects. After passing my Ordinary
Level examination, I have to study in the Mathematical field for my
Advanced Level. I hope to enter the Engineering Faculty of a university.
Engineers face a lot of difficulties and hardship when carrying out
their tasks. No matter how hard it is, I am going to try my best to
become an engineer in the future. It is the biggest dream in my life.

My home town

My home town is Kattankudy. It is in the Batticaloa District in the
Eastern Province. Though Kattankudy is a small town it is one of the
most beautiful and famous towns in Sri Lanka.
There are more than 55,000 people in my town. They are all Muslims.
Business is the main occupation of the people.
There are also farmers and government servants.
My town overlooks a beautiful beach, a big hospital, banks, schools,
many mosques and a water tank.
The date trees and flower pots in the middle of the main road add
beauty to the town. People are good and friendly. They help each other
in every activity. I am proud of living in Kattankudy.

The causes of obesity

In the past people were healthy. They led simple lives. They
cultivated their own lands. They were active. That was the secret of
their good health but at present the people are busy. They have busy
work schedules so they have no time to be physically active. The
inactive people gain weight. At the same time they do less work at homes
and in offices.
They travel by vehicle even for a small distance instead of walking.
Most people spend hours in front of television and the computer. They
don’t get exercises from their leisure time activities. The present day
people have very bad food habits. They eat fast food which contains fat
and carbohydrates. Eating too much fat causes obesity. Eating oversize
food portions is also a reason for obesity.
Advertisements persuade children to have snacks and sugary drinks..
Most of them are bad for the health. There are not enough parks and
sidewalks. Concrete buildings are everywhere. So, people have no
opportunity to do exercises.

Animals on the earth
There are lots of animals on our earth. We cannot tell them by name.
My favourite animals are birds. In each country, there are endemic
species of animals.
Africa has many animals than other countries. Animals and men have
equal right to live on earth but our people destroy forest, then animals
lose their habitat and this causes to become extinct. Some endemic
species are threatened now. There are organisations and their purpose is
to protect animals. In future some animal species will be limited to
only pictures and we will not be able to see them. However, we must care
and protect our animals for future generations.
