Beware of synthetic hair dyes – Poisons Information Unit
by Carol Aloysius
The Head of the Toxicology Poisons Information Unit of the National
Hospital, Dr Waruna Gunatilleka said hypersensitive users of synthetic
hair dyes should be aware of the harmful chemical substances which could
seriously undermine their health.
“Toxicity in hair dyes is mainly due to paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a
chemical substance which is widely used as an oxidisable hair dye. It is
a permanent dye that gives a natural look”, he told the Sunday
Observer.”
The toxic effect of PPD depends on its oxidation and forms a base
that is allergenic,(cause allergies) mutagenic (causes changes) and is
highly toxic.”
Reactions in hypersensitive users when PPD comes in contact with the
skin include dermatitis to the upper eyelids or ears and swelling of the
scalp and face.
Allergic contact dermatitis may become widespread in the body as
well”, he said.” Severe allergy to PPD could result in swelling patches
on the skin surface (contact urticaria)”.
“Anyone who develops an allergic reaction to a hair dye should seek
medical advice immediately. A delay could be fatal at times,” he said.
“We highlighted this health risk during the National Poisons Prevention
Week which concludes today. For further information phone 2686143
General Hospital.”
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) and the Cosmetics Devices and
Drugs Regulatory Authority (CDDRA) sources told the Sunday Observer they
were conducting regular raids on beauty parlours due to the increasing
complaints regarding sub-standard and unauthorised products including
imported hair dyes. “Those operating without (CDDRA) licences and
approval will have their businesses closed and licence cancelled”, they
said.
