'Old Girls' Power on Wheels
Colombo will soon be graced by Sri Lanka's first all-female tag team
cycle race. It will be flagged off on March 1, 2015, at Independence
Square. Past pupils or Old Girls, from Holy Family Convent, Ladies',
Methodist, Musaeus Colleges, St Paul's Milagiriya and Visakha Vidyalaya
will come together in this unique competition all for the love of
cycling.
This is being organised by the Pedal Pushers Cyclists, a non-profit
group that arranges exciting off and on road rides.
"The Girl Power Cycle Race" is an open event where 12 riders from
each school will participate in the relay. Winners of this competition
will carry forward their points, which will contribute to the final
tally of the Girl Power Invitational Inter-School Old Girls Sports Meet
held at the Sports Ministry Grounds on March 8.
This occasion will be a fitting tribute to celebrate International
Women's Day, which promotes friendship and fellowship. Proceeds will be
donated to purchase water purification filters for girl's schools in the
North Central Province, who are desperately in need of clean drinking
water to offset the high, regional incidence of Chronic Kidney Disease
(CKD).
It's a date at Independence Square on March 1, to witness history in
the making and cheer the teams from Holy Family, Ladies', Methodist,
Musaeus, St Paul's and Visakha. Excitement and fun is guaranteed for the
entire family. Contributions for this worthy cause are welcome.
