Trees are our friends

We breathe the fresh air that fills our lungs and gives that wonderful feeling of life. Did you spend even a minute to think about the trees that purify the air? It is done by photosynthesis.

We eat fruits and vegetables that trees give us. When we think about the cruelties of man, we realise that he has forgotten his beginnings.

Trees give us shade even on the sunniest day. It is true that they cut trees for timber, but those who do that should plant at least two trees when they cut one tree. Trees expect nothing in return. Apart from our parents, aren’t trees our ever loving friends?

The new world I saw in my dream

It was a rainy day. Thunder and lightning prompted me to sleep. Suddenly I found myself on Jupiter. Enormous volcanoes and huge creatures were everywhere.

Gigantic creatures were roaming everywhere. I was scared. The fast wind was like a tornadoes . There were also landslides and I was scared of them, The huge creatures drank molten lava and ate soil.

The creatures had only one ear and they could not hear much. They had four eyes, two noses and faces. They didn’t have hair but had horns. Their horns were sharp like knives. At last they saw me. They blew me to my world like a feather flowing in the air.

I was scared. It was early in the morning and the rain had stopped. I was not only scared but also happy to see much huge animals.

An exciting experience

It was a Saturday night. I read a book about space adventure. There were pictures of aliens. It was an exciting story. I wished I could go to space some day. Then I felt sleepy and went to bed. I was thinking about the story before I fell asleep.

My parents decided to go to Mars during the holidays. We travelled to a space shuttle station. There were huge spacecrafts. We boarded a supersonic plane. There were spacesuits and food in it. We got into our spacesuits. We were like astronauts!

My father said that we were heading for Mars. I saw our mother Earth, the ‘Blue planet’ on our way. We passed some comets travelling at high speed. I felt scared. We landed on Mars after some time.

Tiny ‘Green people’ welcomed us. We were floating when we set foot on Mars. It was fantastic! My father hoisted the lion flag with the help of the ‘Green people.’ They were the aliens I had seen in the book. They treated us well.

We invited our ‘new friends’ to visit Earth. They were happy. We waved goodbye and returned to our supersonic plane. We came back to the Earth safely. It was an exciting experience, although it was a dream!

Advantages of tourism in education

Tourism is important to promote national integration and bring people from different parts of the country together. The advantages of tourism are remarkable if they are accompanied with education. Travelling is considered as the most delightful experience in the life of students.

Geography is considered a very dull and uninspiring subject if it is done sitting in the classroom. This subject will become interesting once these places of interest are visited by students. The same goes for history.

We can learn a lot when we see such things or sites.

Tourism is the quickest and the best if not the cheapest method of learning new things.

The importance of water

No human being can live without water for long. It’s important not only for humans but also animals reptiles, birds, fish and plant.

Humans depend on water for drinking, bathing, cooking and washing. It is also a health tonic. Every doctor advises us to drink a lot of water daily. But, it should be clean water. If we drink impure water, we’ll fall ill. Animals, reptiles and birds need water. When there is a drought, they suffer a lot.

Plants cannot grow without water. We have to water them daily. Plants spread out on their roots and absorb water from the soil. Rain water fills rivers, streams, lakes and seas.

Water is used to get electricity. When there is a huge drought in our country electricity supply is reduced.

Swimming, water polo and rowing are water sports. These are events at the Olympic games too.

People waste a lot of water by carelessly using it. Use water carefully for your own good.

My grandparents

My mother parents and my fathers parents are my grandparents. They are still living. My father's parents stay with us.

My grandparents are good and kind. They help us a lot. They feed us too. We love our grandparents very much.

My English teacher

My English teacher's name is Warusapperuma. He is kind and clever. He is very tall. My teacher lives in Giriulla.

Everyday he advises us to be good. He speaks Sinhala and English well. He is 33 years old. His favourite food is string hoppers and his favourite drink is milk. His hobby is reading story books. He helps me to brush up my English knowledge. My English teacher has one elder brother and a younger sister. He has many friends.

Warusapperuma has a new car. He drives it. He can sing well. I love my English teacher.

My country

My country is Sri Lanka. It is an island in the Indian ocean. There are many communities in Sri Lanka. They are Sinhalese, Burghers, Tamils and Muslims.

Sri Lanka exports tea, rubber and coconut. There are many mountains and rivers in Sri Lanka.

My country has beautiful waterfalls. It is also known as the pearl of the Indian ocean. I love my country.

Unity is strength

Working together as a team representing team work is called unity. If a group of people are united they discuss their ideas with each other and appreciate each other. This is a strong bond that we have between each other. It will help us to become successful in our endeavours.

As a family at home we work together. We share our things with each other. It represents unity. In hospitals the doctors and nurses work together to cure the patients. In schools, parliaments, police stations, airports and offices people work as a staff to achieve their goals. Even we can see unity in a circus.

Nobody in this world can live alone. From our childhood our siblings keep us company. We are taught to care and share with each other. When we start to go to school we learn to be in unity with the others. We make friends with each other. It is the first place where we can practise being united as there is a saying “Charity begins at home.”

Unity can be seen in animals too. Ants and termites work in unity to collect their food and build their homes. Unity will save us from battles and arguments. If all the countries are united there will not be any battles. We can be in peace and harmony.

The importance of unity is well explained in a saying by Vijaya Lakmi Pandit that the more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war.
