Interviewed in her hospital bed:
'Drama queen' in the news
By Anuradha Kodagoda
"All these accusations against me are baseless; it's just a case of
mud-slinging. I'm ready to face any accusation because I'm quite
confident about myself.
what was unbearable was the fact that the authorities kept me away
from my two children and my husband and that I couldn't cope up is they
kept me away two days from my children and my husband.
However, they will never leave and will always be with me" said the
'drama queen' who was in the news in the past few weeks.
She was finally located after four police teams went on a search and
the rest is history. We are talking about none other than Shashi
Weerawansa, wife of ex-minister Wimal Weerawansa.

Sashi Weerawansa, when she was arrested |
We met up with her while she was at the Colombo National Hospital two
days ago - the day she was granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate.
She was released on a personal bail of Rs 500,000 and a cash bail of
Rs 15,000 under strict conditions, after a motion seeking bail was taken
up for consideration last Friday (27) before Colombo Fort Magistrate,
Gihan Pilipitiya.
The defendant has been ordered to appear before the court registrar
once every month and to refrain from attempting to influence witnesses
in the case.
She was bailed out and returned to hospital to get further treatment
for her medical condition. It was at this time that we visited her.
We tried to get a glimpse of her bed head ticket but it eluded us and
was nowhere near her bed.
She was quite comfortable in her hospital bed in room number nine of
the Merchants' ward of the Colombo National Hospital.
She quite coolly spoke to visitors who visited her. Sashi Weerawansa
told us that former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and Shranthi Rajapaksa
had just visited her a while ago.
The whole drama began when the CID arrested Shashi Weerawansa at a
private hospital in Malabe last Sunday (22) and she was subsequently
remanded by the Colombo magistrate on charges of submitting forged
documents to obtain a diplomatic passport.
At that time she looked terribly ill with an undiagnosed ear pain,
where specialist doctors couldn't nail the exact disease at the time she
was remanded and transferred from the Neville Fernando private hospital
in Malabe to the prison hospital.
However, she appeared in Courts on the very next day (February 24)
without showing any signs of her illness.
Apparently by the time she was released on personal bail the pain had
spread all over her body and ended up in her womb!
The National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa later said that
the arrest of his wife was to disrupt his political journey and added
that no matter what, he would not bow down before anyone and would
proceed on his political journey.
However, it was later reported that the documents furnished by
Weerawansa to the Department of Registrations of Persons and the
Department of Immigration and Emigration had disappeared.
Currently the CID was also conducting a separate investigation into
the disappearance of documents related to the National Identity Card and
passport of Shashi Weerawansa.
