Dramatic cricket in final of World Cup 1983:

India beat West Indies by 43 runs

WORLD CUP: The 1983 Prudential World Cup was the third edition of the ICC World Cup tournament. Eight countries participated in the event.


All in a good mood...... India’s then Prime Minister Indira Ghandi (on left) said “India can do it.” When she heard the nation had won the final of the 1983 World Cup.

The 1983 World Cup was full of dramatic cricket right from the start. Teams like India and Zimbabwe who were not playing well those days scored upset scored upset victories over the West Indies and Australia respectively.

England, Pakistan, India and tournament favourites West Indies qualified for the semi-finals.

The preliminary matches were played in two groups of four teams each, and each country played the others in its group twice.

The matches consisted of 60 overs per team and were played in traditional white clothing and with red balls.

The 8 teams (West Indies, Australia, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and England) qualified for the final tournament. (7 ball ICC members including then recently appointed full members Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe who qualified by winning the 1982 ICC Trophy).

In the first semi-final England made 213 and India made 217/4 while Pakistan made 184 for 8 and West Indies made 188 for 2 wickets.

In the second semi-final, West Indies won the toss and put Pakistan to bat and the Pakistanis were restricted to 184 for 8 and the West Indies went on to make 188 for 2 wickets.

Semi-finals

Old Trafford June 22nd 1983

England 213 in 60 overs (G. Foweer 33, C.J. Takore 32, A.J. Lamb 29, Kapil Dev 3 for 35) lost to India 217 for 4 wkts in 54.4 overs (S.M. Gavaskar 25, M. Amarnath 46, Yaspal Sharma 61, Sandip Patil 51 not out).

Kennington Oval: June 22:

Pakistan: 184 for 8 wkts in 60 overs (Mohsin Khan 70, Zaheer Abbas 30, M. Marshall 3 for 28) lost to West Indies: 188 for 2 wkts in 48.4 overs (D.L. Haynes 29, I.V.A. Richards 80 not out, H.A. Gomes 50 not out.

Came the final and India were all out for 183 all out in 54.4 overs and the West Indies were all out for 140 in 52 overs in the final played at Lord's. So, India won the final by 43 runs. In the final, only K. Srikkanth (38) and Mohinder Amarnath (26) put up any significant resistance as Roberts, Joel Garner and Holding.
