Sammu Ashan 114 lifts Ananda on day one

An exquisite 114 by Ananda captain Sammu Ashan helped his side to reach 245 for 9 declared on the first day of the 86th Battle of the Maroons encounter between Ananda College and Nalanda College which began at the Sinhalese Sports Club grounds yesterday.

Skipper Ashan, a Sri Lanka schools representative, gathered all his experience to keep one end going as the rest of the batsmen could not make much headway amidst a steady bowling attack by Ayantha de Silva who bowled exceptionally well for Nalanda taking 5 for 32 in 13 overs. Malith Peiris 2 for 34 was the other wicket taker for Nalanda.

Nalanda in their first innings were 112 for 3 with opener Raveen Dassanayake striking a well compiled 53.

The match will be continued today at the SSC grounds.
