The schoolchildren with the bicycles.

Berendina Development Services (BDS) presented bicycles to needy schoolchildren in the Mutur area of Trincomalee district at the Al Mina Maha Vidyalayam, Periyapalam, Mutur recently.

The presentation followed a request by the DS office to assist children from low income families in remote areas of Muttur who face immense difficulties in travelling to school due to long distances and poor public transport facilities.

Berendina identified the 43 schoolchildren - 27 girls and 16 boys from nine schools in the area based on good educational performance and low family income. Many of the children were also from recently resettled families.

The school children were identified from the villages of Paddithidal, Manalchenai, Kanguveli, Munnampodiveddai, Kanguveli, Kaddaiparichchan, Arafanagar, Jabalnagar, Safinagar, Alimchenai, Nalloor, Illankanthai, Seethanaveli, Ralkuly, Koonitivu and Soodaikuda in the Mutur DS.
