Bored with life?:
Have an adventure
Next time you are bored, pull out a map or spin a globe and drop your
finger anywhere.
Wherever
your finger lands is a magical place filled with thousands of species
that don’t exist where you are right now, several languages might be
spoken there that you’ve never heard before. Rare fruit might grow.
Intense healing herbs. The trees might be rainbow coloured. The water
might glow in the dark.
Adventure in travel is always life-expanding because, surrounded by
so much new sensory information, you just can’t help but be fully
present. You get a deeper sense of yourself and your energy and
interest. You may find things that you’ll cherish forever. Or you might
get lost, and spend a day finding your way back to where you need to be.
Finding adventure in every day is true life-expanding stuff, even if
you never travel anywhere.
Adventure is activity, curiosity and living without (or on the
fringes of) rules… Adventure isn’t dangerous in the way that I am
talking about it today… even though it may feel exhilarating.
It’s good
for your brain.
“When you learn, you change the
structure of your brain.
Riding a bike seems impossible
at first. But soon you master it. How? As you practice, your
brain sends ‘bike riding’ messages along certain pathways of
neurons over and over, forming new connections. In fact, the
structure of your brain changes every time you learn, as well as
whenever you have a new thought or memory.” (via national
geographic kids) |
It’s good
for your moods.
Severely depressed people have
benefited greatly from immersion in wilderness-based adventure
therapy. A more scaled back version of adventure- be it learning
to surf or taking a vacation to a new place- can help you if you
are feeling stuck or lackluster to be radiant again.
|
It’s true
inspiration.
Julia Cameron writes in the
creativity-unblocking Artist’s Way book about “filling the well”
of inspiration that runs dry for all of use when we’ve been busy
with all work and no play. Yes: we all lose inspiration. We all
can lose connection with the source of what makes us happy. We
all can get blocked. |
When’s the last time you had an adventure?
I’ve had a strong group of clients lately with very big
responsibility lives who feel - on some level- a deep yearning for
challenge.
Challenge can be its own adventure.
When I ran an art gallery owned by a maverick legend, every day was
like jumping off a cliff. Would I have to figure out how to crane a
million pounds of art into a container in the parking lot? Discover how
to produce a classical music concert in the middle of an art
installation? Give press tours of exhibitions while looking for a team
of 100 people on Craigstlist to build a sculpture?
I never missed a place more when I left because I never felt as able
to do anything as I felt while I was there.
Are you feeling positively challenged right now?
Are you having enough adventure?
End April, early May is traditionally the time of year to step into
action after the festive euphoria… but year-round, any time is a great
time for challenge.
In Feng shui, challenge creates fire element in your life.
Fire element sparks rapid changes, amplifying money, love, health,
happiness…
Adventure and challenge are as important as eating well or sleeping
enough!
Adventure sets you in a totally new frame of mind where-suddenly and
hugely- you are growing again where you’ve been idling.
What can you do to have more of an adventure?
Go do something fun that you’ve always wanted to do!
On that note, I’m off to take the dogs walking down some new streets.
We all start somewhere! |
